Surgery
for Varicose Veins
Surgery is currently the
preferred treatment for very extensive, lumpy-bumpy, so-called truncal
VV and involves physical removal of the veins from under the skin.
Surgery is
usually
performed under a general
anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay in hospital to recuperate,
although some operations can be done as a ‘day-case’.
The great majority of
patients sail through their surgery without difficulty.
However, as with all
operations, there are a number of potential consequences and
complications which are described in the
Patient Information Sheet and
will be discussed with you prior to planning any treatment.
The precise
nature of the surgery depends upon the distribution of the varicose
veins in the leg.
Most patients
require a week or two to recuperate before returning to work.
Increasingly
at Midland Vein Centres we treat truncal varicose veins by means of
Ultrasound
Guided Foam Sclerotherapy
